How to see the workgroup name in windows 7
I lost local network when upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 10 I had the same problem as everyone here, been having it for years in many varieties on different clients' networks.
Today I installed a couple of new Win10 machines onto my local IP subnet - the two pre-existing machines could see them just fine in Network, but could not see themselves or each other. I thought this was strange, especially because the pre-existing machines are in a different workgroup than the new default installs. File Explorer, when I clicked on the Workgroup column, would list Workgroup, but not the workgroup that has existed on this subnet since forever.
So I googled around yet again and found this thread this time. However, Function Discovery Resource Publication was running on all machines manual triggered start. Once I restarted that service on the pre-existing machines, though, everything was instantly fixed. Including that File Explorer now lists both workgroups pre-existing one as well as default Workgroup from new installs.
Thumbs up for Momominta. So I set the latter one on regular Auto start. I have not rebooted everything in order to test, but maybe making those changes will make the effect stick going forward. Yes, thanks, restarting those services solved the problem for me. Now all PCs see each others. But really a user still needs to do such complicate tasks to use a OS on ???
AI is still quite far With the exception that "Computer Browser" is no longer a Service. Adjusting the first two services led to nothing apart from the usual disappointment common to all Windows users! THIS solved it for me I literally stopped 'Function Discovery Resource Publication' and restarted it, and all was finally fixed I also originally had ' Function Discovery Resource Host' set to Automatic Delayed I also changed that to just Automatic, and hopefully it will still work after the next reboot!
My wife says that connecting to NETDRIVE has be troublesome to her for a while she didn't tell me because she thought she was doing something wrong, but now we can't even see the drive prior to installing the drive. I have tried everything listed here, and variations on those, and nothing seems to do the trick. Anybody have any other suggestions?
This tells me it has to be something WIFE. It was automatically added when I changed editions of windows. I upgraded from Home to Pro and for some reason these were enabled. I have done a lengthy reply above, but the simple answer is to do a Reset Network in Network Properties towards the bottom on each machine. I'm assuming that most of the technical stuff is too complex for normal users and that most people like us know what we need to know about file sharing, etc.

And I have already disabled the antivirus - which is Windows Defender. Wednesday, March 28, PM. Can you try the command netcfg -d and then reboot. Is that computer prompting for windows update? Can you also check if there are updated network drivers available? Please do a clean boot on that machine. Can you see the same computer on workgroup? Have you checked for windows firewall? Try to turn it off or add exceptions.
Thanks, Raj. I have already run netcfg -d and rebooted. No fix. Windows Firewall is turned off on all computers right now. Restart the system. Interesting results. Step 3: I turned IPV6 back on and restarted. I can still see nothing, not even the PC I am on. Friday, March 30, PM. All done. Nothing changed.

Totally frustrated here! On my main desktop I cannot see any other computer on the network husband's desktop, and two surface laptops, all of which run Windows 10 Pro.
I have tried all of the suggestions above, rebooting between each change. Connection-specific DNS shows attlocal. Husband's desktop shows same DNS domain name and network name as mine. His computer sees all computers on the network as well as the NAS in his Computer list in File Explorer, which is how all this got started--I really need to be able to get to the NAS from my computer. Just to add a bit more to the mix although trouble began before , I have a new Uverse modem replacing the previous one because of intermittent signal drops Pace AC--same as previous.
All settings appear to be the same other than the network name which was automatically changed on all computers. Both laptops and my desktop had latest Win update Long session with MS tech on this problem--she rolled them both back to update to see if that helped no change , so she scheduled me for escalated tech appointment earliest available was 2 pm two weeks hence.
The rollback also reinstated Homegroup, but homegroup won't let me join, either on my desktop or laptop. Husband's computer is running update. Monday, May 21, PM. Thank you! Hi Pop Page, Nothing to say about your result. Proposed as answer by the wookie Friday, June 14, PM. Tuesday, June 5, AM. My network is fixed, thanks to MS tech. I spent several hours with a Microsoft tech hooked up to my computers and he couldn't get it working, so he gave me an appointment two weeks later for escalated help.
The last tech was the nicest, most patient and knowledgeable tech I have ever run into in my many years of needing tech help, so Kudos to Microsoft!
No kudos, however, for the problem in the first place when all I did was install the updates. Now, don't keep us in suspense, tell us what he did to fix it Wednesday, June 6, PM. Thursday, July 5, PM. I have a similar problem except that it is my wife's computer that's working and mine that can't see any other computers on the network. I may get desperate enough to call MS and if I do, I was wondering if they gave you a case number for your problem?
I'm thinking that I could give it to them and it might let the next tech fix my system in less than 3 hours. If you're concerned that the case number may reveal private information, please don't post it.
If all else fails, I can do a complete reinstall of windows and reload my apps [but I'd rather have a root canal :- ]. Thursday, July 12, AM. Saturday, July 14, PM.
This worked for me. Thank you so much. Thanks again R. Tuesday, July 17, AM. I don't know if it was an update at fault, my incident happened in the same nature, but as soon as I changed from a telstra router to a TPG - TPLINK Archer VRv one, it was intermittent, allowing me to view computers on my network at certain times, but mostly not, also sometimes some computers and not all, and one extremely strange fact was that I was able to print via the network, while the printer was not even listed on the Wireless clients page at all.
Im still having problems, I can ping the devices listed on the routers client pages, but can not see them in any of my 3 windows computers or can any device including android tv boxes and a linux NAS, see eachother. TPLINK replied with an extremely weak response, after I gave information including screenshots and told them that I scanned for malware on all 3 computers using Malwarebytes, came up clean, and I don't use 3rd party antivirus software or firewalls at all, and that Windows firewalls are enabled on all machines, but at default, all networks are set to Private, not public, and file and printer sharing are set to on, and network discovery is enabled on all.
He replied, sounds like a malware problem or a firewall one, and that he will not help further. Friday, July 20, AM. I am completely perplexed by this issue which clearly is of Microsoft's making. In the Properties window, under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, see the name of your workgroup.
Ensure the name of the workgroup or domain is different from the name of any computer on the network. In Windows 7, workgroups are small networks that share files, printers and Internet connections.
After the other computers in your network join the workgroup, their users can share these resources without having to manually set up sharing, permissions and printers. To see the workgroup name, just click a Computer icon in the Network window. The bottom portion of the window displays the workgroup name. To see the workgroups, you organize the window to display Computer icons in workgroup categories. The main difference between workgroups and domains is how resources on the network are managed.
Computers on home networks are usually part of a workgroup, and computers on workplace networks are usually part of a domain. In a workgroup: All computers are peers; no computer has control over another computer. Click on the Start button in the bottom left, then right-click on Computer » Properties.
On the new window, look for the section labeled Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings and click on the Change Settings button to the right.
